The prequel to the popular fantasy TV show Game of Thrones has filmed scenes in Castleton, and several famous actors were spotted donning fantasy clothing for the occasion.
The series, known as House of the Dragon, is a prequel set in the same fantasy universe as A Song of Ice and Fire, the book series that inspired Game of Thrones. Specifically, it is based on George R.R. Martin’s book “Fire & Blood”.
The story was broken by multiple sources, one of which was local MP Robert Largan, who hoped that the new series would be better than the last few seasons of Game of Thrones.
Castleton and the Peak District as a whole has a long and proud tradition in the world of film and television, in no small part due to its endless natural beauty and pastoral village atmosphere.
Tom Cruise filmed a scene in Stoney Middleton for the latest in the Mission Impossible film franchise, the TV series Peak Practice famously was based around the area, and adaptations of Pride and Prejudice and Jane Eyre have filmed scenes in the area.
The local caves, in particular, are incredibly popular for filming, with Cave Dale being used for the Princess Bride and The Other Boleyn Girl, as well as an adaptation of Narnia book The Silver Chair.
This tradition of immortalising Castleton on the stage stretches back to 1616 when playwright Ben Johnson briefly included the town in one of his plays.
